Participatory mapping allows researchers to collect spatial information from stakeholders directly. Mapping materials can include sketch maps, scaled printed maps, 3-D landscape models, and digital maps.

Most projects that use participatory mapping do so at a local scale. It is always recommended to select participants relevant to the process and issues at the study scale.
